Pogostemon cablin, a plant of the mint family, gives the 50 ml oil: it is taken from the dried leaves by steam distillation. The oil is for fragrance use only, never to eat, drink or put on skin.
The word patchouli comes from the Tamil 'pachchai ilai', meaning green leaf. In eastern countries the oil is used in potpourri and sachets for its scent, and it was popular in incense in the 1960s and 70s.
