About this gift

It comes from Pogostemon cablin, a plant of the mint family. The young leaves are dried and fermented, then steam distilled, which means steam is passed through the leaves to carry the oil out. The name comes from the Tamil 'pachchai ilai', meaning 'green leaf', and the oil's fragrance deepens with age.
Patchouli has a long history in home fragrance. In eastern countries it is traditionally used in potpourri and in sachets between linen and clothes, and in Victorian times it was packed between Indian cashmere shawls to keep moths off.
