## About this gift

Rich, musky-sweet and spicy, patchouli has a scent all its own. This 10 ml essential oil comes from Pogostemon cablin, a plant of the mint family. An essential oil is the concentrated scent of a plant, here drawn out by steam distillation.

The oil is taken from the young leaves, which are dried and fermented before distilling, and its fragrance deepens with age. The name comes from the Tamil 'pachchai ilai', meaning 'green leaf'. In Victorian times, patchouli was packed between Indian cashmere shawls bound for England, and its scent became the shawls' signature.

In eastern countries, patchouli is traditionally used in potpourris and sachets placed between linen and clothes for its fragrance. At home it goes in an oil burner, where the rich scent fills the room. For anyone drawn to deep, musky scents, it is a classic worth having on hand.
