## About meditation & Yoga

A singing bowl is played by circling its rim with a wooden striker until it sings, or by tapping it once; the long tone is used to open or close a meditation. Mala beads are a string of 108 beads used to count mantras or breaths.

A firm cushion raises your hips so you can sit cross-legged for longer. Yoga mats are listed with their thickness and length, and prayer flags with their size and the number of flags in a string.

## Questions

### How do you play a singing bowl?

Hold the bowl flat on your palm or set it on its cushion. Tap the side once with the striker, then run the striker slowly round the outer rim with steady pressure until the bowl starts to hum. Bigger bowls give a deeper note.

### Why do mala beads have 108 beads?

108 is a sacred number in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and a full mala lets you count 108 mantras or breaths without losing your place. The larger guru bead marks the start and end of the round.
