## About incense

Incense sticks are the simplest: light the tip, blow out the flame and stand the stick in a holder. Cones burn faster and stronger. Backflow cones have a hole underneath, so the smoke pours down through a backflow burner like a waterfall.

Resin incense, such as frankincense and myrrh, is burned on a charcoal disc in a heatproof dish: the oldest way to burn incense. White sage bundles and palo santo are used in cleansing rituals. Always burn incense on a heatproof holder, in an airy room, away from anything that could catch.

## Questions

### What is backflow incense?

Backflow incense cones have a small hole underneath. Placed on a backflow burner, their smoke flows downwards over the burner's shape, so it looks like a waterfall or mist. You need a backflow burner to see the effect.

### How do you burn resin incense?

Light a charcoal disc with tongs, set it in a heatproof dish with sand, and wait until it turns grey. Then place a small piece of resin, such as frankincense, on top. Keep the dish on a heat-safe surface.
