# Horoscope meaning: what a horoscope is and how to read one > A horoscope is an astrological reading based on where the sun, moon and planets sit at a given time, used in astrology as a tradition for reflection and entertainment. - Published by Holistic Tree: 2026-10-16; last reviewed 2026-10-16 - URL: https://holistictree.co.uk/guides/horoscope-meaning ## Key points - A horoscope is a reading of where the sun, moon and planets sit at a set time. The word comes from the Greek horoskopos, "hour watcher". - There are 12 zodiac signs, from Aries (21 March to 19 April) to Pisces (19 February to 20 March). Dates move by a day in some years. - Each sign has an element (fire, earth, air or water) and a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable). - A birth chart needs your date, exact time and place of birth. Your sun, moon and rising signs are the big three. - Read horoscopes as a tradition and a prompt for reflection, and choose zodiac gifts by the person's sun sign. ## What does horoscope mean? Horoscope meaning, in short: a horoscope is a reading of where the sun, moon and planets sit at a set time, told through the 12 zodiac signs. The word comes from the Greek *horoskopos*, "hour watcher". It can mean a full birth chart or a short star sign column. The zodiac goes back to Babylonian astronomers, who split the sky into 12 parts. Newspaper horoscopes took off in the 1930s, after R.H. Naylor wrote about Princess Margaret's birth chart in the Sunday Express in 1930. We see astrology as a tradition and a prompt for reflection, not a science or a forecast. Start with three signs. Your sun sign is the sign the sun was in on your birthday, and it is the one newspaper columns use. Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Your moon sign is the sign the moon was in when you were born. In astrology, the sun stands for your core self, the moon for feelings and the rising sign for how you meet the world. Many astrology fans read the column for their rising sign as well as their sun sign. **Daily, weekly and monthly horoscopes.** A daily horoscope is a short note on the day's moon and planet moves. Weekly and monthly ones cover bigger shifts, like a new moon or a planet changing sign. Read them as prompts for reflection, not as forecasts. **Planets and houses.** A house is one of 12 slices of the chart, and each one is tied to an area of life. So "Venus enters your fifth house" means Venus is passing through the slice astrology links with fun and creativity for your sign. A planet is retrograde when it seems to move backwards in the sky, seen from Earth. Astrology links this with review and second looks. Keep a sign guide to hand with the [Astrology Card Gift Set](/products/astrology-cards-gift-set) (£7.49): 38 circular cards covering each sign's ruling planet, traits, compatibility and element. A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of where the sun, moon and planets were at the exact time and place you were born. It is drawn as a wheel. You need three things: 1. Your date of birth. 2. Your exact time of birth. 3. Your place of birth. Without the time, you still get your sun sign and most planet signs, but not your rising sign or houses. **The big three.** Your sun, moon and rising signs are the core of the chart, and astrologers read them first. **The 12 houses.** Each house is a slice of the wheel tied to one area of life, from self (1st) through home (4th), partners (7th) and career (10th) to the hidden and spiritual (12th). **The main planets in astrology.** - Sun: core identity. - Moon: feelings and habits. - Mercury: thinking and talking. - Venus: love, beauty and values. - Mars: drive and action. - Jupiter: growth and opportunity. - Saturn: rules, limits and hard work. Bring the wheel home. No. Your star sign, or sun sign, is the sign the sun was in on your birthday. A horoscope is a reading based on where the sun, moon and planets are, either for a sign in a column or for one person in a birth chart. ### What are the star sign dates in the UK? The UK uses the standard tropical dates, from Aries (21 March to 19 April) to Pisces (19 February to 20 March). Dates move by a day in some years, so check your year if you were born near the edge of a sign. ### Are horoscopes scientific? No. Astrology is a tradition that goes back thousands of years, not a science, and horoscopes do not predict events. Many people enjoy them as entertainment and a prompt to reflect on their week. ### Do I need my birth time for a birth chart? For a full chart, yes. Your exact birth time sets your rising sign and the 12 houses. Without it, you can still find your sun sign and most planet signs. ### What makes a good zodiac gift? Choose something with their sun sign on it that they will use. Our zodiac candle and bracelet sets, keepsake boxes and bath fizzer sets come in all 12 signs, and every order goes by tracked UK delivery.
