The Feast of the Guardian Angels is on 2 October. - Wings, halos, white feathers and angel numbers like 333 are symbols. Angel numbers are a modern folk belief, not scripture. - A figurine, pendant or tealight holder gives the idea a place in your home or a spot close to you, from £4.49. ## What is a guardian angel? A guardian angel is a spiritual being that many traditions believe is given to one person to watch over them through life. In Catholic teaching, each believer is held to have an angel beside them from birth. Many people today keep the idea as a quiet comfort, whatever their faith. The word **angel** comes from the Greek *angelos*, meaning messenger. So the picture is of a guide who carries a message, not a distant figure. People tend to use the idea in a few ways: - **A companion.** A sense that someone is walking beside you. - **A reminder.** A cue to pause, breathe and think before you act. - **A keepsake.** A figure or pendant that marks a new baby, a loved one remembered or a fresh start. Here we set out what believers hold, and make it easy to keep the symbol close. Want something for a shelf? Start with our [guardian angel figurines and angel gifts](/gothic-and-fantasy). The belief is old. It sits mainly in Christian tradition, with echoes in other faiths. Here is what the main sources say. - **Psalm 91:11** is the verse most often cited: 'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.' - **Matthew 18:10** is cited too. It speaks of the angels in heaven who see the face of the Father. Many readers take this as a reference to angels linked to individuals. - **Tobit**, a book found in Catholic Bibles, tells of the angel Raphael who goes with a young man, Tobias, on a long journey. - **Thomas Aquinas**, the medieval theologian, wrote on guardian angels, and his work shaped later teaching. - **The Catechism of the Catholic Church** teaches that an angel stands beside each believer. The **Feast of the Guardian Angels** is a day in the Roman Catholic calendar set aside to honour them. It falls on 2 October each year. Many people also know the childhood prayer that begins 'Angel of God, my guardian dear'. One note on names. An **archangel** is a higher-ranking angel in Christian tradition. Michael is the best known, often shown as a warrior. He is a separate figure from a personal guardian angel, but many people like to display both. For a true statement piece, the [Archangel Michael Bronzed Resin Figurine 37 cm](/products/bronzed-archangel-michael-the-religious-warrior) (£61.49). It is tall, detailed and made to be the centre of a shelf or altar. - [Archangel Michael Bronzed Resin Figurine 37 cm](https://holistictree.co.uk/products/bronzed-archangel-michael-the-religious-warrior): £61.49 ## What does a guardian angel symbol mean? Angel imagery carries a lot of meaning in a small space. Here are the symbols you will see most. - **Wings.** Wings show an angel as a messenger who moves between heaven and earth. - **Halo.** A halo is a ring of light round the head. In Christian art it is a traditional sign of holiness. - **White feather.** Many people see a white feather as a sign that a loved one or an angel is near. This is a folk belief, not a teaching of any church. - **Angel numbers.** An **angel number** is a repeating sequence of digits, such as 111 or 333, that some people read as a message. This is a modern folk belief. It is not in scripture. People who follow it often read 333 as a note of encouragement. None of these symbols make promises. They give you something to look at, hold and think about. That is the point of keeping one. If the numbers speak to you, the [333 Angel Number Necklace](/products/333-angel-number-divine-support-necklace) (£5.49). There is no single method. Different traditions suggest different practices, and none come with a promised result. These are the ones people mention most. - **Prayer.** In Catholic practice, short prayers to the guardian angel are common, especially at the start or end of the day. - **Quiet time.** Some people sit for a few minutes, breathe slowly and bring the idea to mind. - **Journaling.** Writing a short note to your angel, or noting signs you noticed, gives the habit a shape. - **A candle.** Lighting a candle marks the moment as set apart. - **An altar.** A small shelf or table with an angel figure and a few meaningful items gives you a regular place to pause. Our guide on [how to set up an altar](/guides/how-to-set-up-an-altar) shows you how. If you use a candle, keep it simple and safe. Use a heatproof holder, never leave a flame burning unattended, and keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch. Start with three questions. Who is it for? Where will it go? What is your budget? - **For a new baby or christening:** pick something gentle and giftable. A small figure or a hanging angel works well. - **For someone remembering a loved one:** a pendant or a tealight holder is a quiet, personal keepsake. - **For yourself:** choose the style that makes you pause when you see it. Then think about size. A small figure suits a desk or bedside. A larger one needs a shelf or mantel of its own. The [Hati-Hati Guardian Angel Figurine 25 cm](/products/hati-hati-angel-guardian) (£15.99). It is a good mid-size choice, tall enough to stand out and easy to place. If you want a larger piece, the [Large Mango Wood Guardian Angel Statue](/products/mango-wood-guardian-angel-with-metal-wings) (£26.49). It has metal wings, which give it extra presence on a mantel or hallway table. All of these sit in our [guardian angel figurines and angel gifts](/gothic-and-fantasy) collection. A little care keeps your angel looking good for years. - **Wood figures:** dust with a soft, dry cloth. Keep them away from damp, radiators and strong direct sun. - **Glass decorations:** handle gently and hang them where they will not get knocked. - **Pendants:** keep them dry. Take them off before showers or swimming, and keep them away from perfume and cleaning products. Wipe with a soft cloth and store them in a pouch. - **Incense:** use a proper holder with an ash catcher, burn in a ventilated room, never leave it burning unattended, and keep it away from children and pets. Pendants are the easiest way to carry the idea with you.
